Bowling Ball Hook Potentials
Do I have the potential to be a great bowler?
I went bowling about 2 months ago with friends and had so much fun that I decided to buy a ball and enter a league. After just 2 months I am consistently bowling 200 games and just last week I bowled a 709 series (233, 267, & 209). I've always picked up new sports quite quickly but this has been a surprise. Because of my size and build I throw the ball quite hard and with a very sharp hook. Pressure in competition is not an issue for me and I believe with coaching I could be a really good bowler. Is there anyone out there who has extensive experience that could tell me if I should consider taking this sport seriously and set goals oriented toward becoming a professional someday? Suggestions?
This has got to not be cricket related as nothing like you mention would be able to happen playing cricket. If you are referring to Ten Pin Bowling which seems more logical given the scores you mention then you most definitely have potential. I was doing ten pin bowling in a league from about the age of 13 until I turned 18 and the highest I ever got was 235. For a score of 267 you could only have dropped 2 frames and most league bowlers wouldn't do this more than a couple of times in a career unless they represent the country they are a citizen of. My uncle was a league bowler for about 25 years and completed all spare combinations including the 7 and 10 which is almost impossible. The highest score he got was 266 so you've already beat that.

What's a good bowling ball to buy?
I really enjoy bowling my average is 164. I just started bowling with my thumb all the way in use to only bowl with half of my thumb in but wanted a more consistent shot so decided to learn. I would like a ball with a good hooking potential that doesn't need a lot of maintenance I currently use a Black Widow Pearl but it picks up so much oil I can't stand it. I've been using hot water and dawn which really actually helps but it's pretty annoying to do so much. So please help if you have any recommendations. Thanks!
What should you buy? It depends on your style for starters. Do you consider yourself a cranker, a tweener, or a stroker? Do you like to play outside and throw more of a straight shot or do you move to the deep inside line and hook it a lot? Do you bowl on drier lanes or heavier oil?
I would start with your local pro shop inside your bowling house. Have the "pro" watch you throw a few shots with the ball you currently use. He'll get an idea of your style, speed, and the amount of "revs" that you put on the ball. From there, he will be able to make a ball recommendation based on what he sees.
I'll give you a couple of options.
Ebonite Game Plan.......good ball for a medium lane to medium heavy oil and drier lane conditions with higher polish. The Game Plan will give you good length and a smooth strong continuation on the back-end making this ball good for most house shots and even sports league shots. Very good ball.
The Storm Virtual Gravity Nano is awesome, especially on heavier oil. Tommy Hess used it to win his first PBA tournament a couple weeks ago.
I am more of a stroker, and throw about 14 mph. I just got the Hammer Jigsaw Trap (after throwing Storm for many years) and it has a very nice "skid/snap". It doesn't hook too early, gets down the lane and hits the pocket like a truck. I bowl on medium/heavy oil and it's perfect for that. It carries extremely well and I leave fewer 10-pins than I used to.
