what type of bowling ball should i use?
i want to curve the ball more when I bowl. i heard that you use a weighted ball where one side is slightly heavier than the other. is this true? and are they more expensive than a normal ball?
p.s. I use a 12lb. ball
It's true that high-performance balls have special cores which distributes the weight unevenly. It's a lot more complex than just one side weighing more than the other, though. And the outside (coverstock) of the ball has more friction, which also causes hook. But again, it's a lot more complicated than just basic friction.
There're dozens of types of bowling balls on the market and while the top-of-the-line balls cost many times more than a basic plastic ball, if you're a beginner you can start with an entry level ball which is a small step up from a plastic ball, and while they don't have much striking power, they allow for easily controllable hook. Prices vary, so talk to your pro shop.
Get a coach and some lessons so you can learn to hook properly and not pick up any bad habits along the way.
BTW, if you can move up to a heavier ball, do so. 12lb balls won't carry the pins as well, and some high-performance balls only start at 13 or 14lb because their cores are so heavy. Again, the pro shop will help you determine the best weight for you.

The beginning of the 1980s marked the introduction of polyurethane as the main material used for manufacturing bowling balls. Ebonite was the one to develop the technology, but the rights were sold to AMF, because the developers did not believe players would pay the high price demanded by the technology. It proved to be a big mistake.
AMF started to produce this kind of balls because they got a better grip on the polyurethane finishes that were used on the lanes manufactured from natural wood. This caused a major change and proved to be a turning point for the entire game of bowling.
In the 1990s the regulations regarding the densities of the balls were changed. Instead of a uniform sphere surrounded by a coating, perfectly centered inside the ball, other methods for manufacturing were now being developed.
