Bowling Ball Packages Cannot get humidity in snake's cage above 20%?
My boyfriend and I got a ball python last week. We have kept the temp. at around 88-90 during the day and 78 at night. But our humidity has always been very low and never above 20 degrees. We currently have wood chip type stuff that came with cage, on the bottom of the cage and we have a bowl of water, and the water dish that came with the package in the cage. But still, the humidity will not go up.
Now today we are seeing that the snake's eyes are milky blue, meaning he will shed soon and i read that i need a humidity of around at least 60% for when he sheds and we can't figure out how to get it any higher.
We also have sprayed the snake and cage with a tropical mist that's supposed to help, but still no luck.
Please help!! We don't want our snake to get hurt or anything during the shedding process.
RH (Relative Humidity) is the cause of two factors :
-Temperature
-Water
To achieve a higher level of RH you can place the water bowl near the heat source (under a heat lamp, over the heat pad, etc.), this wil evaporate the water much more rapidly but it will keep the humidity high. Other thing you need to take into consideration when adjusting the RH in your terrarium is the ventilation it has, if it has very poor ventilation it will hold humidity really well, but it can cause fungi and mold to grow that can cause a respiratory infection in your snake. If you have really good ventilation in your terrarium it won´t hold humidity too well, causing shedding and skin problems.
