It's a Wide-Open Time for Trades
N.F.L. trades are traditionally sporadic because when the salary cap is in place, there are ramifications for both teams. A trade could be more trouble and more complex than it was worth, particularly when the free-agent market was rich with players who came with no strings attached and no haggling was necessary with another team.
But with no salary cap this year, coupled with a weak unrestricted free-agent class and the top eight teams being hamstrung by rules that limit their ability to sign free agents, the door has opened on major player deals. It is still nowhere near the free-for-all of baseball's trading deadline, but some of the biggest moves this off-season have come through trades.
The Jets, a top four team with little maneuverability in free agency, have shaken up their roster by trading for cornerback Antonio Cromartie and receiver Santonio Holmes. The Ravens, a final eight team, got receiver Anquan Boldin in a trade. And while the Eagles would likely have had to move one of their three quarterbacks no matter what, the trade of Donovan McNabb, and his big contract, to the Washington Redskins was facilitated by the absence of a salary cap.
The movement is probably a one-year aberration. When the salary cap returns with a new collective bargaining agreement, the N.F.L. trade market is likely to slow again.
The Dolphins finally joined the arms race, trading for Marshall, who had been a Broncos headache — but a really productive one — for Coach Josh McDaniels. In exchange, the Broncos will receive the Dolphins' second-round draft pick in next week's draft and their second-rounder in the 2011 draft.
With Braylon Edwards (Jets), Holmes (Jets), Randy Moss (Patriots), Wes Welker (Patriots) and now Marshall, the American Football Conference might have more passing-game firepower than any other division.
Marshall butted heads with McDaniels — he was suspended for essentially throwing a tantrum in training camp and was benched later in the season — and has had brushes with the law.
It was obvious when the Broncos placed only a first-round tender on Marshall — rather than a first- and third-round tender — that they wanted to trade him. With their public differences, no team would give up a first-rounder in the restricted free-agent market. On Tuesday, Marshall signed his tender and the trade was set in motion.
The root of Marshall's recent frustration with the Broncos was their failure to give him a lucrative contract extension after he produced sensational seasons playing with a fourth-round draft picks contract. Whether McDaniels, as a rookie head coach last year, could have handled Marshall's situation better will be debated in Denver, particularly if Marshall stays out of trouble and sparks the Dolphins' offense.
The Dolphins, despite Coach Tony Sparano's earlier comments that he did not think Marshall would be a good fit, apparently had little hesitation about Marshall. They gave him a four-year contract extension that includes $24 million guaranteed, making him among the highest-paid receivers in N.F.L. history.
That is sure to please Marshall. He will also get away from the city where his good friend and teammate Darrent Williams was murdered.
For the Broncos, the deal is better than many league observers expected. They now have three picks in the first two rounds, and in getting two second-rounders, they got better compensation for Marshall than Arizona did for Boldin and the Steelers did (fifth-rounder for Holmes, whose value was depressed by his impending four-game suspension).
Marshall is the second big-name trade the Broncos have made on McDaniels's watch. They traded quarterback Jay Cutler to the Bears last year.
At 26, Marshall is in the prime of his career. At 6-foot-4, 229 pounds, he gives the Dolphins the big catch-and-run receiver they have craved for several years. Paired with the up-and-coming quarterback Chad Henne and pass-catching threats like Greg Camarillo and Davone Bess, the Dolphins now have an explosive passing game — coupled with the running back tandem of Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown — to keep pace with the Patriots and the Jets.
With the Jets on an all-out push to dethrone the Patriots and make a Super Bowl run, the Dolphins badly needed an infusion on offense. The matchup of Marshall against the Jets' premier cornerback Darrelle Revis is sure to be a marquee attraction twice a season. The odd man out is likely to be Ted Ginn Jr., the former first-round draft pick who in three seasons has caught only 128 passes for 1,664 yards and 5 touchdowns.
Last year, Marshall caught 101 passes for 1,120 yards and 10 touchdowns. And the odd team out in what is one of the most competitive divisions in the N.F.L.? The Buffalo Bills, who have made almost no moves in free agency.
